The Phil’s Mahler cycle with a difference begins with a tribute to the young Mahler and his heroes.
Mahler’s youthful First Symphony hardly needs introduction; from rapturous opening to triumphant finish, it’s become one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire. But Mahler could never have written it without the inspiration of his friend Hans Rott - and when you hear the superb Scherzo from Rott’s only symphony, you’ll realise why.
