The British Open 2008 Royal Birkdale

Winning by four shots after a superb final round. 17-20 July 2008Royal Birkdale Golf ClubSouthport is delighted to host, once again, the most prestigious golf tournament in the world, when the 137th Open Championship which returns in July for the ninth time to Royal Birkdale Golf Club on the north west coast of England. Royal Birkdale is, for many, simply the greatest course to have staged The Open Championship. This famous challenging links course last hosted the Open Championship in July 1998 when Mark O'Meara beat Brian Watts in a play off. Visitors to the 2008 Championship will continue to be impressed with the improvements to the course and clubhouse. The golfing digest ranking of the top 100 best courses positions Royal Birkdale 18th outside of the USA. Practice days are from 13-16 July, with the Championship running from 17-20 July. Accommodation Directions To The Open Follow the 'Open' road signs provided by the AA. Travelling from the North Follow M6, exit at junction 29, Leyland, to the A582,A59 and A565 Travelling from the East (M62) Follow M62, M57 and A5147 Travelling from Central Lancashire Follow M58, exit at junction 3, Rainford, to the A570 Travelling from the South Follow M6, exit at junction 26, Orrell, to M58, exit at junction 3, Rainford, to A570 Travelling from Wales and the Wirral Follow M56, M6, exit at junction 26, Orrell, to M58, exit at junction 3, Rainford, to A570. Park & Ride Park and Ride facilities will be clearly signed and will be operating a short distance from the course. There are no Public car parks adjacent to the course and those arriving by car without a Reserved car park label should use the Park and Ride facilities.
