FACT Gallery Exhibition

Open Eye Gallery

Exhibition: Anne Collier
11 April - 24 May 08
Open Eye Gallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery of work by New York based artist Anne Collier.

Over the past decade Collier has created a body of work that investigates the role of photographs in contemporary culture. She takes images from everyday popular culture - 1970's posters, art magazines and record sleeves, then re-presents them in the white space of the gallery. Often re-photographing existing photographs - making images of images - Collier meditates on the nature of images and our ways of seeing them. Her formal, rigorous compositions hint at the stories of her own life, in what has been described as a kind of 'deflected self-portraiture'. She also investigates the wider world of images that we inhabit, reminding us that every photograph is a material object with its own history or 'biography'. Pointing up hidden nuances of power and gender relations, her work is laced with irony and dry humour. She explores our closeness to images, pointing out that we are entangled with them in ways that we rarely stop to consider.

John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize

Competition & Exhibition
20 Sept 08 - 04 Jan 2009
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the John Moores Prize. First held in 1957, it is the UK's best-known competition for painters and is named after Sir John Moores (1896-1993), the founder of the competition. The exhibition is held every 2 years at the Walker Art Gallery in partnership with the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition Trust.

This year the John Moores exhibition coincides with Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture 2008 when it forms a key strand of the well established Liverpool Biennial. The John Moores exhibition showcases the best new paintings produced in the UK today and attracts a broad spectrum of artists. No preference is given to levels of experience or particular practices of painting. The work is selected anonymously from an open submission by the jury, who also award the main prizes. There is a first prize of £25,000 along with 4 further prizes, each of £2,500. The visitor's choice prize is £2008. The 2008 Jury includes: The Chapman Brothers (Jake and Dinos Chapman), Sacha Craddock (art critic/curator), Graham Crowley (artist) and Paul Morrison (artist).
